The bestselling Scaffolding Language, Scaffolding Learning helped tens of thousands of mainstream elementary teachers ensure that their English language learners became full members of the school community with the language and content skills they needed for success.  In the highly anticipated Second Edition, Pauline Gibbons updates her classic text with a multitude of practical ideas for the classroom, supported by the latest research in the field of ELL/ESL.

With clear directions and classroom tested strategies for supporting students’ academic progress, Gibbons shows how the teaching of language can be integrated seamlessly with the teaching of content, and how academic achievement can be boosted without sacrificing our own vision of education to the dictates of knee-jerk accountability.  Rich examples of classroom discourse illustrate exactly how the scaffolding process works, while activities to facilitate conversation and higher-level thinking put the latest research on second language learning into action.

Buen producto. Solo habían unas partes destacas, nada muy notorio.

Helpful book with practical strategies. Very straightforward and easy to read. This was assigned for a class I took, and it is probably a book I am most likely to refer to after the class is over than any other text I have used recently.

For my class, I originally had the previous edition of this book, but I realized how much information how many additional teaching strategies I was missing I quickly purchased this edition. Really great stuff. It really boosts my repertoire of teaching strategies and they seem very engaging, excited to try them with my classes in the fall.

Bought because my daughter needed it for class.

If every educator in the US read this and applied the techniques and strategies and really took this to heart, we would revolutionize education. This is as good a text for teachers without ESL/ELL learners as it is for those who have such students.

Assigned this for class. It is easy to read, the author really gets to the point, and offers a lot of suggestions on techniques that can be used in the classroom. It discusses some theory, but also gives a lot of examples of practice.

Consegna puntualissima!

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 27, 2014
This book makes a strong case for the integration of language and content learning, with a focus on research-proven contexts and strategies that help ensure success for all students. It provides multiple examples of authentic "classroom talk" such as teacher-guided reporting, student "rehearsal for reporting", and a teacher talking with children explicitly about how to work together collaboratively. It also includes activities for developing all aspects of language learning, demonstrating how these can be meaningfully integrated with subject knowledge as part of a holistic curriculum. Particularly useful is the chapter on learning to write in a second language and culture, which describes some common school genres in terms of their purpose, organization, structure (connectives) and other language features (such as tense and specific vocabulary). The chapter also provides a question framework for assessing writing which can be used to assess individual student's writing, build up a class profile, or adapted for self-assessment purposes. The final chapter is dedicated to developing integrated units and provides guidance on "finding the language in the content" so as to make language-learning explicit across the curriculum. Suggestions for further reading are listed at the end of each chapter.
