Box came moldy

Box came moldy
The reed box came partially crushed, and had mold on the inside. The package insert that talks about how "factory fresh" the reeds are was also moldy, which is ironic. The box it shipped in was fine, so this isn't something that happened during shipping.The reeds themselves are supposedly sealed from moisture and such, and after opening one it appeared fine, but with mold, it's hard to tell if spores had penetrated the reed packaging. This isn't acceptable. Clearly these reeds are not being maintained properly, or were wet at some point, and weren't disposed of or returned. This could get an adult or child sick if the reeds are contaminated.

Tried 4 reeds and after slight touch up work they work well. I was using green java 2.5's, but they seemed to be harder to play and took much more adjustment. The 2.5 zz's graded the same as the green javas. Some other varieties of Vandorens 2.5's grade higher; you must check their website or you will be disappointed. I'm using a Jody Jazz HR* 6M alto mouthpiece.

I could copy and paste this review on the Vandoren Traditional, V21s, v16s, java greens, java reds, and ZZ Jazz reeds. Vandoren reeds work. If you're using cheap (sub $20-25 per 10 reeds) reeds, you or your child doesn't even know how good they are. The difference is that significant. Jump to the traditional or the java reds which go on sale more, or watch out for a sale on these or the v21s. You will hear a difference. The player will know the difference. It won't be subtle. It's worth it.

Really, these are somewhere between java and traditional in sound, so if your playing has that clear, classical tone and you have some rock-y or big-band-y selections and you want to liven it up, give these a shot and you can still use them for concert practice.

When you hit it out of the park with a reed from this line, you absolutely hit it out of the park. However the reed quality can be quite subjective so if you do buy prepare to do some work on a few of these reeds. Some are awesome straight out of the box and some are impossible to wrangle. Love the sound but be prepared.

Saxophone reeds can be a matter of personal preference and out son tested a few different ones and prefers the Vandoren brand and in particular this one.

I recommend testing a variety pack with different strength and sticking with what works best. In our sons case, it was the Vandoren ZZ strength 2.5
