Product Description
Product Description
Highly praised by Bass Player Magazine as their favourite flatwound string. Unique materials produce a unique tone.
From the Manufacturer
The flatwound bass string that’s been awarded many accolades since its inception in 1966. Wound with the premium alloy Monel, Jazz Bass strings sound deeper and offer more resistance than the more commonly used stainless steel wrap.
From the manufacturer
Rotosound SM77 Hybrid Gauge Stainless Steel Monel Flat Wound Bass Strings
The Monel flatwound bass string that’s been awarded many accolades since its inception
Why do so many artists choose Rotosound?
By helping music icons like Jimi Hendrix, John Entwistle and Geddy Lee to create their amazing sounds, Rotosound strings have become synonymous with the British Tone. Renowned throughout the world, Rotosound is the home of legendary products such as Swing Bass 66 and Roto strings.
For over fifty years now their strings have changed the sound of rock and have been used on some of the most amazing albums recorded by some of the best artists in the business.
Founded in 1958 by James How as a small, UK based, family-owned and operated company, Rotosound core values are little changed today. Each string is physically and visually inspected at every stage of the manufacturing process to get maximum consistency, ensuring each one is unrivaled in tone, tuning stability and durability.
Why the SM77?
The Jazz bass series has found favour with so many of the world's leading artists including the likes of Oasis, Steve Harris, Roger Waters and Herbie Flowers.
The Monel 400 tape used in the strings making brings out the true character of these strings over the competition who are happy to use the much less costly flattened stainless steel.
An iconic, legendary British brand
- Manufactured the "old fashioned way" by hand on machines built at the end of the 1960’s
- Used by many top leading artists including Oasis, Steve Harris, Roger Waters and Herbie Flowers
- Long Scale

Bottom line: If you like flats but still want a somewhat crisp high end, these are great.
Update:
It has been 5 years and I still have the same original set on the bass. It doesn't get used as much as my other basses, but I do play it frequently so they have worn in. The strings are still very bright compared to other flatwounds I have played. I have grown to love the sound and I am glad they weren't dull out of the pack like I thought I wanted. When they have been too bright, I just roll down the tone and get the subby dullness. But the great thing about these strings is that I can turn the tone back up and enjoy the brightness. Couldn't do that with most other flatwounds I have tried.
Easier on the fingers. Gonna have to mess around with the trust rod. They do sound pretty good.
7/24/15 got another set and same thing, except this time it is the E that is dead. I guess I will have to give up on Roto, my all time favorite strings. :( Too bad. That is three sets in a row, different sting each time.

Edit: I've had these on the bass for a month or so now and feel a little bad about my original review.
These are really good and bumped up to five stars.
