OUR STORY

In 1989, DR Strings re-introduced hand-made round core string making to the general market. It requires a lot of skill, time and care, but we feel it’s worth it because we can hear the difference between a handmade string and a machine made string.

Maybe I Got A Bad Set?

Maybe I Got A Bad Set?
The moment I opened this pack of strings and felt the texture of them I knew something was off. I’ve owned two sets of DR Legends in the past and they are quality strings that definitely give labella and TI flats a run for their money. I chose this brand to go on my newly acquired Stingray Classic however, something is way off. The E and A strings in particular feel rough. Not quite as rough as a round wound string but definitely not the same level of quality and smoothness as I’ve experienced with past sets of this string. Almost like a cheap ground wound string. And the sound.. I know I’m buying flats but these flats brand new out of the box sound rich and full, and age like fine wine into that thumpy warm tone. This set sounds terribly lifeless and uneven straight out of the box. Not only that, the D string core completely slipped during installation and is now useless. Surely I thought to myself that the quality couldn’t have dropped off this terribly? So I compared it to two year old DR Legend Flats I had stored from my Fender P-bass, and surely enough I was right. Each string on the old set was perfectly smooth and felt right. So much so I decided to install them on the Stingray instead and WOW the difference that made. At two years old the previous set of these particular strings completely blew the brand new set out of the water. I hope DR isn’t sacrificing quality control to save costs on manufacturing. I would very much rather pay an extra $4-$5 to keep the same level of quality of years’ past than to get the subpar product I received today for $35. I’m going to definitely try and exchange this set for a different one and give DR the benefit of the doubt for now. But if DR Legend strings really has changed then perhaps the Legend dead.

I've gotten hooked on flatwound strings, for the comfortable feel and no 'raking' sound when you move your hand on the fretboard. I strictly play La Bella flats on my P-Bass. But they just don't sound right on a Jazz Bass.

I guess what I really want on the Jazz Bass is a set of strings that *sound* like rounds, but *feel* like flats. I think that may be what DR is going for here. They really don't feel flat — they're more like half-rounds — but they are pretty comfortable to play, don't make a *lot* of the raking noise (although they do a little), and they sound excellent on the Jazz Bass.

I got them because I was first trying out a set of D'Addario Half Rounds, which felt decent but sounded *terrible*, especially the completely dead E string. No sustain whatsoever. These DR's, on the other hand, sound extremely consistent string-to-string, with great ringing tone and lots of sustain.

I think I may have just found my go-to strings for Jazz Bass.

Versatile and reliable, they've become an indispensable part of my setup, infusing every note with brilliance. These remind me of Labellas. I put them on a Fender American Original 60s J. Thumpy E and A and brighter D and G out of the box. The biggest difference is the Legends are round core and have much lighter tension. They're a breeze to play and feel super smooth like Labellas. From a personal perspective I tend to prefer a 50 gauge G and 70 gauge D to balance the tone out and I think these strings could benefit from having that (Labellas could too) but regardless these DRs are great flats if you like the old school style thuddier flatwounds.

These are my go-to strings for flats. I have a soft spot for TI Jazz Flats, but they're expensive and, for the Rock/Blues/Soul stuff I play most, well, they just don't sound $50 better than these DR flats. These are bit heavier tension than the TIs (what isn't?), but nothing like LaBellas. They're a nice mix of being easy to play, but providing enough resistance for when you really wanna dig in. I've got them on my P-Bass and I get that nice round sound, with just the right mix of thump and punch. I had them on my Jazz for a bit, and they were okay, but I ended up going back to rounds for that--these flats just seemed to dampen some of the characteristics, the more pronounced growl, especially, that make a Jazz bass sound different than a P-Bass. I think these strings really shine if you're pushing the mids, but maybe less so if you tend toward a more scooped, smiley-face EQ set up, but I tend to think that's just the case with flats in general--your preferences might differ. Oh, last thing, and I think this, too, applies to flats in general: if you like heavy overdrive or distortion or fuzz, but you've got either a cheap pedal or a half-assed on-amp drive setting, well, put on your hip-waders 'cause it's gonna get seriously muddy.

I am used to Labella's, so I'm trying not to compare these to them. These are nowhere near as smooth to the touch as Labella's. They have a feel of roundwounds, but not nearly as ridgy. They are very bright and give a great sound that's in between rounds and flats. I f you are looking for a traditional flatwounds, I would suggest Labella's as you first and final set. If you are looking to explore a new sound, try these.

Have tried several flatwound strings and depending on the bass you have them on, I think they are all great. (D'Addario, Rotosound and DRs, as well as Fender and Rotosound tapewound flats).

I have the DR "Legends" on a '54 style P Bass, with one single coil pickup. The DRs are the best on this bass, for the crunchy percussive sound like Carl Radle had on JJ Cale's 'Naturally' album. I'd tried D'Addario previously and they weren't right for this (but they really rock on my G&L SB2).

The thing the DRs have over other flats is they are so flexible and have a lower tension. They also have a clear finish, so while they are nice and thumpy as flatwound should be they also have this clear as a bell tone. So they have great presence and such a great feel you just can't stop playing them. A friend who played my '54 Pbass, who's been playing for more than 30 years and a 'flats man', said they reminded him of his LaBellas which are his strings of choice on his 60's Jazz.

I'm going to test the DRs across three flatwound basses I have with other brand flats. Need to get some GHS Precision Flats for the test. But I have the feeling that the DRs will be the best overall flatwound.

Love the strings
Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2022
I really wanted to love these strings. I had them on my P-bass for about a year. From the beginning, the E string was a little off compared to the rest, which all had a beautiful, full flat-wound tone. Some of the best I've had on a bass, after playing for 30 years. But the E was always a little boomy, dull and flat (not in pitch sense, but in a presence sense). It did not improve with age, nor did the other strings even out. If anything, the difference it became more pronounced. I'm moving on.

5.0 out of 5 stars These Flatwounds Rock!
Reviewed in Canada on April 13, 2018
I’ve been playing bass for well over 20 years and believe it or not I’ve never had tried flatwound strings before. I’ve been a big fan of DR strings for longtime and for the last few years I’ve been using the Dragon Skin strings (which I love). But I’ve always had a desire to try out flatwounds. So I finally did it and bought these. The first week I pretty much hated these strings. Because there are wound flat they are very smooth and it felt like wire cutting through my skin when I was playing at first. So I thought I made a mistake first but I played through it now I love it even better than my Dragon Skin that I have on my other bass. Now they feel way better than other strings plus they sound amazing for the style of music I play. It turned out to be a great buy after all!
