From the Manufacturer
LEGEND™ Polished Flatwound Bass Strings have long been a jazz, R&B, funk and reggae musical standard due to their warm, mellow tone, rounded low end and a dark and defined thump. The feel of the polished stainless-steel wrap wire is smooth and comfortable under the fingers while the round core wire provides great flexibility.
From the manufacturer
OUR STORY
In 1989, DR Strings re-introduced hand-made round core string making to the general market. It requires a lot of skill, time and care, but we feel it’s worth it because we can hear the difference between a handmade string and a machine made string.

I guess what I really want on the Jazz Bass is a set of strings that *sound* like rounds, but *feel* like flats. I think that may be what DR is going for here. They really don't feel flat — they're more like half-rounds — but they are pretty comfortable to play, don't make a *lot* of the raking noise (although they do a little), and they sound excellent on the Jazz Bass.
I got them because I was first trying out a set of D'Addario Half Rounds, which felt decent but sounded *terrible*, especially the completely dead E string. No sustain whatsoever. These DR's, on the other hand, sound extremely consistent string-to-string, with great ringing tone and lots of sustain.
I think I may have just found my go-to strings for Jazz Bass.
I have the DR "Legends" on a '54 style P Bass, with one single coil pickup. The DRs are the best on this bass, for the crunchy percussive sound like Carl Radle had on JJ Cale's 'Naturally' album. I'd tried D'Addario previously and they weren't right for this (but they really rock on my G&L SB2).
The thing the DRs have over other flats is they are so flexible and have a lower tension. They also have a clear finish, so while they are nice and thumpy as flatwound should be they also have this clear as a bell tone. So they have great presence and such a great feel you just can't stop playing them. A friend who played my '54 Pbass, who's been playing for more than 30 years and a 'flats man', said they reminded him of his LaBellas which are his strings of choice on his 60's Jazz.
I'm going to test the DRs across three flatwound basses I have with other brand flats. Need to get some GHS Precision Flats for the test. But I have the feeling that the DRs will be the best overall flatwound.
