Yarn

Yarn 101: How to Choose the Right Yarn for Your Project

Yarn is perhaps the most essential component of knitting and crocheting–so how do you know which one is right for your special project?

Here are some quick and easy tips to get you started:

Sweater

Yarn

Scarf

Fiber Content

The fiber content of the yarn that's right for your project will likely be determined by its end use. Wool and silk yarns are great for warmth–think sweaters, scarves and blankets. Use cotton yarns for durability–great for fashion accessories, window treatments, and home décor accents.

Texture

A good rule of thumb is the more ornate the yarn, the simpler your project’s pattern or shape should be. Novelty yarns like boucle, marled, or variegated are perfect for shawls and blankets whereas more classic, plain varieties like smooth plied yarn are great for more stitching techniques.

Weight

Categorized by the thickness of the thread, yarn weights range from 0 to 7 or “lace” to “jumbo”. Use lighter weights (0-2) for socks and delicate baby apparel. Medium weights (3-4) are great for sweaters, scarves and light outerwear. Heavier weights (5-7) for best suited for blankets and rugs.

Nice wool yarn
Beautiful chocolate brown color and typical wool feel.Fairly easy to crochet with but does split easily which is annoying.I am using a 6mm hook for tunisian crochet and you can clearly see the yarn is pretty much untwisted and flat on the shank of the hook. Although annoying, it is working up to be a softer feel wool fabric with more fluff than it would be if werea tighter twist...All in all a good yarn and will purchase again.

I love working with this yarn. I have only used the 100% solid colors though because reviews state that all but one of the tweeds ( maple, I believe -which I can't find) have bits of hard polyester/nylon in them. Although not as tightly would as I like yarn to be, I have not had any colors I have used split at all. The yarn not only works up well, it's actually pretty soft for a 100% wool yarn, and it also felts great as well as takes dye very well. Because it is 100% wool however, I always take any 100% natural animal fiber yarn and place it the warming drawer of my oven and bring it to 130 for an hour or so and then store them in plastic bags after. The heat will ensure there are no moths, larvae or eggs, etc. in them but just to be safe I still bag them after. The only downside to this yarn I can say is the cost here on Amazon. These skeins (solid or tweed) at most run 9.99 just about everywhere else, and occasionally even less when on sale. I purchased these skeins here when they were at 10.00, but now coming back and seeing these and the other Fishermen's yarn costing between 13-18+ dollars per skein is more than I am willing to spend on them. I am not sure why the price got hiked to the point of even nearly doubled? If they drop to 10.00 again I would buy them here, but until then I will buy them elsewhere when needed.

Excellent yarn for the price! durable, warm, soft, nice color. Love the twistyness of the Oak Tweed. I made a shawl from this yarn for the historic site where I work, and my coworker traded in the one I had made for her because she liked this coloring better. So be ye warned, items made from this yarn may induce covetousness and incite thievery. Will purchase again.

I bought pure wool by luck at thrift shops over last couple of weeks - several cream balls all different makes ( some Patons, some a mohair wool blend some alpaca wool - all 100% so lucked out! spent less than $10 for all of it !) I am almost finished my aran fairly intricate sweater - just need about two more balls - spent ages choosing and ordered another 'cream' wool because I like the quality in another colour - but the 'cream' was nothing like all the different thrift shop ones - more 'off-white' - looks and feels terrible - undid it and spent over an hour on amazon comparing wools and reviews - went with this one - hugely pleased I did ! honestly so large I can even make a tam o'shanter hat and gloves to match the sweater - best of all it is great quality and does not 'split' when cabling which given the pattern is very important - beautifully soft, I'm hooked ! will buy in other colours too

As someone who prefers working with natural fibers, I really love Lion Brand's Fisherman's Wool. I wont claim it's perfect. It's not uncommon to come across inclusions throughout a given skein, usually pieces of cotton tie or little pieces of plant matter, though I've never encountered anything I couldn't just pick out. The yarn can also be a little on the scratchy side, but even that is minimal, and to be expected given that this is a natural fiber ( I feel obliged to point out that as someone with sensitive skin AND contact dermatitis I have had NO issue crocheting for long periods of times with this yarn - no itchy or chafed hands here! )

That being said, I've never had any issue working with this yarn. I've used it for both weaving and crocheting and really enjoy working with it in both settings. The shawls I've made using this yarn came out SO warm and cozy, and I've gotten so many complements on them. Also my cats seem to love this yarn more than any other I buy and love to rub all over anything I make with it - do with that information what you will!
