You have to hand it to Danelectro, there is no attempt to hide the fine slab of particle-board from which this is made. It gleams unabashedly through the layer of sun-burst finish. The 'sitar' sound is provided by vibrating the strings over a horizontal length of plastic bridge and while this is effective in making the twangy sound, it does mute the overall volume (crank up the amp) and there is, of course, no sustain. Out-of-the-box intonation is poor (substantially sharp at the octave), and the brand feature fade-out of the high E-string / higher register is also present, so some set-up will be needed, despite the claim that this is done at the factory.
The neck is very playable, the best yet, and the instrument is light. You can tell by looking at it that the body a will be oddly shaped for playing sitting down without a strap. So there you have it. I love Danelectro, owning 3 guitars, a selection of pedals, and this baby sitar. Compared to the others, for what this is, I think the $500 price tag is excessive when for an extra $150 you can get the 6/12 twin-neck which is a classic!

My wife got me this instrument for a gift, and at first blush it's great. By that I mean, you get this super cool Sitar-like sound with the convenience of fretting positions based on a standard guitar. Sounds from Steely Dan, The Rolling Stones, Steve Miller and Spinal Tap are all quickly at your fingertips. For that fun factor alone, this is a great little picker. The problem is that it is impossible to set-up (and I paid money from a professional) such that every fret is either A. Able to make the cool Sitar sound or B. properly Intonated (such that the played not is neither flat or sharp from the correct note). And at least a 1/3 of the notes on this instrument can't do either A or B. It's also got a pretty low output that results in a lot of unwanted noise. And that's why it gets such a low score. Don't get me wrong, do I still pick this thing up from time to time and just go nuts for an hour at a time? You bet! It IS insanely fun to play in the range of frets that actually give you A & B. But given the overall inconsistency of the build, the cost doesn't quite align with the result.
