Product Description

The GEL-Venture 5 shoe provides great fit and everyday comfort, with Rearfoot gel cushioning technology and a rugged outsole ideal for a variety of terrains.

In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company (Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," which, when translated, expresses the ancient ideal of "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body." Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness. Today, ASICS offers a full line of performance-driven athletic shoes and technical active sports apparel and accessories dedicated to bringing harmony to the body and soul.

In the past 3 years, I have bought 4 styles of Asics running shoes and these are my favorite! My sell points for determining that these are "good" sneakers:1.) Toe Space - I have problems with my toes going numb if I don't have adequate room in the toe box. To accommodate, I usually order a size 10 and lace up tightly (when I wear a 9 or 9.5) in regular shoes. This causes my shoes to typically wear faster in the heels because they side around a little, but my toes don't go numb after my daily 4 mile trail hike.2.) Comfort - This includes arch support and overall cushioning. I have bad knees, so I can tell when the cushioning starts to go in sneakers. Mine last almost 3 months exactly when worn for 4 miles daily.3.) Cuteness - Sorry to be vain but I want sneakers to be cute and have pink on them. These are the only kind I buy. Judge me if you must ;)4.) Easy to put on / take off - I hate untying my shoes, so I love that these have a loop in the back so I can slip them on with minimal unlacing (lazy).5.) Doesn't cake-in dirt/mud - When on loose dirt trails, I often encounter dirt & mud that gets caked into my soles, so I favor the Asics styles over, say K-Swiss because the soles don't have a lot of "hiding places" for mud to get packed into.I compared:ASICS Women's Gel-Venture 5 - My all time favorite for toe space as well as cushion and arch support and wears well.ASICS Women's Gel-contend 3 - Wider in the arch area but narrow in the toes and heels.ASICS Women's Gel-scram 2 - Great toe space but not much arch support to speak of (super-cute though!)ASICS Women's Gel Frequency 2 - Actually a walking shoe and built much less "tough" and more lightweight but has a flimsy feel to it and comes up short against the back of the heel, so it fit kinda weird. When I say these shoes "wear well" I mean that they don't look like they are falling apart even after much use/wear. The only indicators of wear that they show are some wear on the inside of the heels but probably only because I wear a half size too big on purpose, and also some fraying where the inner fabric (pink) meets the lace holes. (See pics)Overall, I love these shoes the best of all I've tried in Asics as well as Adidas, Saucony, Vibram and K-Swiss and won't be straying from the Gel-Venture 5 shoes again. I love them and don't think it gets any better than this :)

I bought these shoes after searching through other peoples reviews who had used them for hiking and trail running. I was hoping to use them for both of these activities and for my upcoming spartan race, and training I do in the gym( lots of HIIT type stuff). After reading through reviews I thought that for the price they would be worth trying. I have ran have ran multiple half marathons, and a marathon, so I'm pretty picky about the quality of the shoes I wear to run in. I've usually only bought Sauconys kinvaras, but have owned a pair of asics and I loved them! SO I gave these a try and here is my opinion of them.

Some reviewers mentioned that they run small, my tip is to buy any shoes for running half a size larger, to a whole size larger than your normal shoe size, this is because your feet will swell while you are running. I have narrow, flat feet and bought these shoes in a size larger than my regular shoe size. I took them on a few 4-5 mile walks, and 4 mile trail run, and have had no blisters, or aches and pains in my feet, hips/ knees/ or back at all. I also found that they were stiffer than my regular running shoes, but I think this is for added stability in the ankle area. I don't think these shoes are the lightest trail running shoes, so if that is what you are looking for you may want to try a trail shoe with more of a natural foot like feel, with more heal drop in the sole of the shoe, for instance, my running shoes have a 4mm heal drop, and are very very light shoes. These are heavier then my regular running shoes, but not so heavy that they feel clunky, and I didn't feel like I was working harder on my run because of the added weight. My foot felt very stable and supported, and I don't think you would feel any rocks if you were to take these hiking or running on a rocky trail. I thought the cushion was good in these too. Others have noted adding a gel insert for high arches, I have really flat feet so the support didn't bother me at all in these shoes.I didn't notice that the shoe was to tight through the top of the foot, but I like my running shoes to be laced snug through the top of my foot, and loose towards the bottom with the toe box being wider.

Overall, i've spent a couple of hours walking around and running in these shoes, and I think they are great quality for the price you are paying, and Asics is a wonderful brand. I also love the color options, and chose the black, coral and mint color because when they get muddy in the spartan race I can wash them and they won't be stained.

I'm a runner and i tend to have to go up a half size in trail running shoes, especially to accommodate my insoles (I have stupid high arches). These aren't trail runners, so I figure all running shoes are like this. I ordered these specifically to support my knees on days when they were bothering me (and otherwise, i wear my QCs)

THE GOOD:
These are great for supporting weak knees and high arches. They also helped me manage my shin splints. They're really competitive in price, and they look nice, if that matters. They're also incredibly comfortable for schlepping around town and running errands (Which i recommend you DON'T do with your dedicated running shoes, but I'm a lazy sob sometimes)

THE BAD
NO STRETCHY LACES. My god, runners. Don't buy laces without any stretch. Your foot may go numb. I had to swap out the laces almost immediately. They also don't really support a mid-foot strike for anybody to whom that doesn't come naturally. I'm a heel striker naturally, which can lead to pain for me. I also have this pair of trail runners which almost force a mid foot strike, and that's what running shoes should aim for, in my limited opinion. I bought these specifically so that i could keep running even when i was having some pain.

MY BODY
I have very high arches, am somewhat knock kneed, and am prone to knee pain and shin splints. I run between a 3-5k most days, at an average speed of 6mph. I'm slight but with my knee issues, i sometimes need a shoe that gives me less contact with the ground. (I prefer one with more, but it's worse impact-wise)

RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT?
Yup. If you're the kind of person who needs the additional support, it's a pretty good shoe. And the price is right.
