Let me note that I'm a folk fiddler, not a classical violinist, and probably a $1000 bow is overkill for my skill level. So, I decided, a $30 made-in-China carbon fiber bow was worth taking a chance on.
Was I surprised, though. It took a good amount of rosin to get it working, but once done, it was really not too bad at all. It doesn't quite dig into the violin like my good bow, and requires more power to get the same sound, but it does play. In fact the more I played, the more I got used to it. It's pretty good.
It doesn't bounce excessively, as cheap wooden bows and those really cheap old fiberglass bows did that I have used in years past. It has a nice balance to it, light but not too light, certainly not too heavy, not too rigid. Whoever actually made this bow really has the details down. I am quite impressed.
These types of "good enough" violin bows are taking over the amateur market. A friend of mine doesn't even bother with bow rehairing any more. It's not worth paying $60-$70 for a professional job, when he can spend $30 to $40 for a whole new bow. Kind of sad in a way... just adds to the waste stream... but maybe save up all those old balding bows and give them to your bow maker to fix up and sell. He's going to need the income.
I'll be getting one of these for my daughter, who also plays folk music but is classically trained as well. Certainly worth the price.
Played well the first time, though I believe it needs even more rosin. Don't expect a brand new bow to work well without getting some rosin into it. Doesn't respond quite as well as another bow that I am used to, but it works.
Great value in a bow, works well, feels sturdy enough. I'm not entirely sure how long it will last (it definitely feels a bit fragile compared to what I'm used to), but so far, so good.
I rehair my own bows and will go through a hank of hair and pick out only the nicest, thickest hairs. Discarding the kinked and smaller diameter hair.
After receiving and applying a good amount of rosin I commenced to play, did not like the feel. I use mostly Glasser fiberglass bows, with thick hairs. I believe the thin hair was the problem and debated replacing the hair from the beginning, but didn’t. Humans in general do not like change and I thought I would give it some time. Time has passed and I now get along with this bow just fine. I can switch back and forth with my other bows with no problems. One other small concern initially encountered was the amount of hairs that broke in the first few months, it lost more than I would have like to see go but I haven’t had a strand break for several months and all seems well now. For my taste 150 strands fit a Glasser about right, I don’t know how many strands this one started out with but it lost approximately 25-30 before it settled down.
In closing, I like the composition and balance of the bow, the hair mounted is questionable and could be different on another bow of the same build. The frog has continued to worked smoothly. The ‘leather’ has held up without problem. I plan on using the body and frog of this one for a long time. All bow's hair wears out with time and usage.
makes noise when I pull it across the strings. They definitely skimped on the hair, but if you want an emergency back-up, this is a cheap and relatively decent option.
The first arrived in Amazon box with only a loose sheet of brown paper which provided no package stability. The bow had a crack in it about 3 inches from the tip. Thankfully Amazon return policy is good. Returned it.
The second bow arrived in same-sized Amazon box with Nothing else in it, just the loose bow. Inspected and thankfully no cracks/breaks in the carbon fiber. However, upon tightening it up, it seemed to bottom out before getting fully tight. I took apart the frog and the screw threads aren't aligned in the stick mortise, probably because the mortise or the end of the stick aren't correct to allow the screw to be at the correct depth. And after attempting to tighten it enough, it seems now that the threads in the frog nut are half stripped out.
I'm not returning this one because I don't expect a 3rd to be any better, but i'm ordering frog screw hardware to fix it. Annoyed. At least it was inexpensive.
Top reviews from other countries
It took just a while for the shipping, and the packaging was good enough. To be honest, when I first saw this bow, I was a little disappointed, probably because i have a bit expectation on the look after reading all those good reviews. There is nothing fancy about this violin bow, and the detailed finishing might be a little rough too. However, when i tried to draw the bow, across the violin strings, i figured how easy it was to use.
It is light, strong and nicely balanced overall, and I am sure it requires less maintenance than wooden bows as its made of carbon fibre. This bow has truly improved my playing and bow hold. I am sure you can get a much better bow with higher price, but with this price, your mind will be truly blown away by this bow.
UNICA NOTA DOLENTE CHE NON MI HA FATTO DARE 5 STELLE, E' L'IMBALLAGGIO CON CUI E' ARRIVATO,PRATICAMENTE INESISTENTE !!!! NESSUNA PROTEZIONE PER IL TRASPORTO, LO CONTENEVA UNA SCATOLA,MEZZA SCASSATA,E TUTTA ROVINATA. NOTO CHE DA QUALCHE TEMPO NON VENGONO PIU CURATI E PROTETTI GLI OGGETTI ACQUISTATI E LA COSA MI PREOCCUPA ALQUANTO.
