Common Uses

A solar powered energizer often used with electric fences to contain sheep, goats, poultry, swine, cattle and horses. Effective against predators such as coyotes, stray dogs, bears and foxes.

Can also be used with garden and wildlife fences to keep out deer, raccoons, woodchucks, rabbits, opossums and skunks.

Solar powered energizers are a popular choice when 110V power is not easily accessible. Attached solar panel will recharge the battery on sunny days.

Should Power

  • 3-5 rolls of electric netting depending on soil conditions and vegetation
  • 1 mile of 3 strand cattle fence
  • 1/2 mile of 5-7 strand sheep fence

Solar Panel Angle

Correct placement of the energizer and solar panel is critical to the best operation of the unit.

Position the energizer so that the solar panel faces due south. This will allow the panel to receive the maximum amount of sunlight possible even during the low-light days of winter. Consider the sun’s movement throughout the day and avoid placing the unit where it may be covered by shadows from trees, bushes or tall grass.

Miscellaneous

  • Use included ground U-Spike or use at least a 18" galvanized ground rod.
  • Draw from a 12V battery is 20–58 milliampere (mA) per hour, depending on weed load.
  • 40 pulses per minute.
  • When properly used or stored, the battery should last 3–4 years. (Assumes maximum 40% draw down on battery.)

Benefits

  • New for 2020! External 110V adapter port for faster plug-in connections for recharging.
  • Solar panel is easy to adjust for seasonal light availability.
  • Included step-in ground stake can also be used to support energizer.
  • Easily accessible fence and ground terminals. Fence and ground wiring harness included.
  • External 110V port allows the energizer to be operated without a battery and plugged into a 110V power source.
  • Large capacity battery for increased life during long periods with low sunlight.
  • Highly visible on/off light with low battery indicator.
  • Won’t rust. Made from durable UV-treated polycarbonate.

Solar IntelliShock 60

IntelliShock electric fence chargers are able to reduce energy demand when the fence’s voltage is high–due to fewer weeds touching the fence. This occurs in fall and winter for most fences and occurs all year for some horse, cattle and deer fences. As a result, an IntelliShock unit’s battery is more likely to remain charged through the low sunlight days of autumn and winter.

Precautions

For livestock use only.

  • Make sure the power is turned off before working on the fence or the energizer.
  • Make sure the fence line is clear of grass and debris that may lower the fence’s voltage.
  • Regularly remove all debris from the solar panel.
  • Batteries that are less than 40% charged may become damaged. Batteries MUST remain fully charged in freezing conditions.

Reduce Risk & Liability

  • Never place your head or upper spine near an electrified wire. Accidental head or neck contact can occur when pushing a voltage probe into the soil. Be careful when doing so to avoid head-to-wire contact!
  • Never attempt to step over or climb through an energized fence of any kind.
  • Never encourage anyone to touch an electric fence.

Includes

  • 0.60 joule fence energizer

How to Use

Open the energizer lid and connect the wires to the battery as indicated on the enclosed sticker. Remove the U-Spike and wiring harness from inside the battery compartment. Using 10mm wrench, remove the bolts holding the solar panel in place and replace with the supplied knobs (shipped inside the unit). Step in the ground U-Spike. For added support, you can slide the energizer onto top of U-Spike.

Use the wiring harness to connect the energizer to the ground stake and fence.

  1. Unscrew the red terminal knob.
  2. Secure the bare end of the wire with the orange clip into the hole behind the red terminal knob.
  3. Replace the red terminal knob and tighten.
  4. Repeat steps #1-3 for the black ground terminal.
  5. Connect the black clip to the ground stake.
  6. Connect the orange clip to the fence.
  7. Turn energizer on. (When switching on, make sure the power button is pressed all the way in.)
  8. Check the voltage to ensure the fence is properly electrified to at least 3000v before introducing animals.

Easy to install and reliable
My wife and I were a little intimidated by the idea of installing our own solar powered electric fence for our goats. But this was honestly so easy. We've had it installed and running for three weeks now with NO ISSUES at all. We live in Washington state, so our yard is very wet and muddy. We've had no discharging issues due to weather. Great unit and we couldn't be happier with it.

Works great. Used this unit with chickens and chicken-netting, with hogs and chicken-netting, and with bare wire on patio railing to keep dogs from jumping over.

But.... looking on Premier 1's website, this same unit is about $50 cheaper than Amazon (as of 02/02/2023). The current Amazon price is $40 higher than what I paid on Amazon three-years ago.

I am planning on buying more units, but will probably buy directly from Premier 1 and use the savings on more electrified poultry netting.

OVERALL: Great unit!! I will buy again!!

We purchased this to use for our chickens safety! We also purchased the chicken net but have not used it yet We have a basic metal and chicken wire coop for meat birds and they stay inside all the tine and we move it. So we put wire around the bottom using plastic clips made for it and attached this intelishock and it works fantastic! Battery charges even on cloudy days! It makes a ticking sound when it hits. You can easily identify a place where grass or a stick or whatever is touching and address the issue. My dog is an 80lb bulldog and he touched it with his nose. He yelped like I never heard before loud! And has never gone near the chickens again. So it works on him I'm sure these other critters don't stand a chance!

My sheep learned quickly to respect the electric mesh this is hooked to. Measured 10,200 volts at the far end of 164' electric mesh connected to this energizer. Dogs and cats avoid it, too.

I purchased two of these and both failed at about the 3 year mark. They have a 2 year warranty. Both units failed in the same manner -- output fell to almost nothing. The animals just started ignoring the fences as if they weren't even there. At around $300 each, i would expect them to last longer and be more reliable.

Also, I do not recommend using them on two connected fences. They don't have enough power for that. Their output drops by more than half with two fences connected.

Lastly, a gentle cleaner can restore the solar panel transparency once they turn white frosted from the elements. That will help boost the power a bit.

I purchased this because my brother has the same one for his chickens. It arrived he helped me set it up, went to turn it on after a charge and nothing came on. We have tried several attempt and get plenty of sun to charge the battery and none of it worked. We plugged it in and it works off and on. The panel can get returned but there is a restocking fee unless they find it defective. I asked for a replacement since but no prevail. Don't waste your time and money with an item that does not have a warranty.
*update* after 6 months my brother's stopped working. Even when you plug it in. Buyer beware
