Sturdy. Goes thru rocky soils

This tool is great. drills holes in our rocky soil. Easiest way to plant bulbs I have ever used. Cuts time and labor. One other advantage is depth of bulb. I've used shovels (large and small), picks, and spud bar. It is difficult to get the bulbs down to the depth needed. This helps me plant each bulb down to about 6 inches.

Only problem is that, Now, I have no excuse for planting a few hundred bulbs.

I needed an 18” deep hole to install a 3” PVC pipe that was 8’ long. Since we have had many 100+ days here with no rain, I ran a small sprinkler overnight at the intended spot. Using a 1/2” corded hammer drill, it took less than 5 minutes to reach that depth. I backed out the auger a few times to clear the dirt, but there was no spinning of the bit. I also had a handle installed as there is quite a bit of torque involved and could sprain your wrist. This was definitely the right tool for the job, and I highly recommend it.

I purchased this to make short work of some spring planting after I thought there must be a better way than using a shovel to dig a few dozen small holes. Well there is, and this is it.

What I liked:
- simple design, good construction
- it makes holes in dirt
- saves me time and effort!

What I did not like:
-the auger does not pull as much dirt from the hole as I was imagining. Not a big deal though.
-weight: this auger is heavy and very long, so on the end of a standard hand drill, the balance feels off, but you get used to it.

Tips:
-Wear eye protection - this thing is moving very fast and can throw small pieces of debris.
-Dry compacted dirt makes things much more difficult. Wet the ground and it will slice through more easily.
-You may want to use two hands to use your drill: your hand drill likely has a lot of power and when the auger gets stuck, the torque will be transferred to your hand and wrist.
-For anyone who doesn't understand what this is designed for: this will not dig large holes like post holes. That said, I did use it for breaking up the ground in a few problem areas where I did need to dig a large hole.

I've had this less than a week. I've used it to drill maybe 100 holes in my garden. So far it has worked very well although it doesn't do well with rocks. We have clay soil that is very wet. This digs in pretty good and makes drilling holes for potatoes and potted plants a quick exercise. When I go past 2-3 inches deep, the torque comes back to the drill so you should probably hold on with both hands or it will twist your forearm. About 10-20% of the time, I've had to reverse the drill and back out because the Auger and drill were putting too much torque on my hands. I'm starting to try and go a little slower so I don't get the torque coming back at me as much.

So far it seems strong and well made. It can take a few attempts to get the shaft to be tightened into the chuck in the drill. Perhaps I didn't get it lined upright as it worked better today.

the cone shaped tip hits hard dirt and doesnt go into hard dirt very well. they should have made a flat tip like a screwdriver to help get the tip going. the metal wears fast. i rototilled my yard then used this to auger holes to plant my new groundcover. im seeing significant wear on the auger after 50 holes. the auger is only welded at the ends. that spiral will fall off as soon as that first welded area breaks. the good stuff is that its easy to use and they size is good. it doesnt catch in the hole very much even when it hits rocks. it broke up a few rocks and it lifts the dirt out of the hole pretty well.

It is perfect for plants. It took me a bit of practice to learn how best to hold it so it did not just auger itself into the ground without making a usable hole. I have to brace my wrists on my knees and let it down slowly. The other trick is removing the dirt that it dislodges. I find I can stop the drill, pull out the auger, position it a foot or two away, and give it a good spin to shake off the dirt. Then back into the hole. I love how deep I can do with it. We have used it to "plant" 4x4 posts. It is much better for us than trying to use a shovel. I just angle the auger back and forth to make the hole wider. It works like a champ. We are so glad we got this tool.
