Be aware that like with all ukuleles, the strings will stretch quite a bit when new and don’t hold their tuning long. Retuning was needed before each use for about the first month, but now it holds its tune quite well.
For the first time ever I am taking well to an instrument and enjoying practicing. And this instrument is a great value! I've become very fond of it.
This is a very basic, student grade instrument. It's made of inexpensive laminate wood and cheap vinyl strings. The paint job is shoddy. The fret board and neck are actually one piece of wood painted to look separate. (The frets are actually metal.) The bridge is plastic.
HOWEVER, it's surprisingly functional. After the first week of play (once the strings stretch and are broken in) it stays in tune really well. It has a very slippery finish, so I added some grippy stuff to the back of the body and neck to help me learn to hold it correctly. Problem solved very easily. One of the tuning pegs was poorly milled and "crunched" some when first tuning, but has smoothed out now.
I would definitely not classify this as a "toy" ukelele, as some reviewers have suggested. (Although it would make a great gift for a kid 5-12 years old. I'm a teacher at an elementary school and this is a similar uke to the ones my students learn on.) The sound is surprisingly nice. The action is good. The resonance is perfectly fine. It's a good beginning instrument and perfect for someone like me. I wouldn't be embarrassed to play this in front of friends. I feel confident that I'm not being held back by the fact that I didn't invest in a more professional uke yet.
At first I thought it didn't come with the picks and spare strings, but they were just hidden in an inconspicuous zipper section on the front of the gig bag. The bag, by the way, is not padded. Just a basic gig bag. But the zipper is smooth and the strap is fine.
Again, this is baseline, entry level gear. It's perfect for someone who would like to try something new without making a huge investment. I will absolutely recommend this instrument to friends who would like a uke for a beginner.
