This coding game has a play mode and a coding mode. The coding mode is super simple, it has not been a challenge at all for our 4 year old daughter. I think a more appropriate age would be 3+ Years but she does enjoy playing with the puppies and the accessories it came with.

We have 3 girls & a toy review channel; so we're always looking for something new to try. This cute playset is very entertaining. Our 3 yr old has lots of fun playing with Ranger. I thought it would be a bit intimidating learning to code for a 3 yr old (ok, I admit I thought I'd be intimated too lol) but she/I understand what to do to get Ranger playing. I will say that she is advanced for recently turning 3 & the box recommends 4+; so keep in mind your child's skill level if purchasing to avoid disappointment.

Ranger has the 4 directional buttons that you program to get him to perform a task. We programmed him to catch Zip on the slide, play hide & seek, use the fire extinguisher (he is a male doggy after all 😂) and circle his house to get inside for a 'nap'.

When you press Rangers nose for 2 seconds it turns on the play mode. Ranger dances to 4 different songs; goes on patrol, makes munching sounds for chewing his bone & snores. Zip is not programmable but he does have 4 wheels and can magnetically attach to Rangers nose. That's actually how Ranger can 'catch' him when he slides. They can also dance together the same way. We found Ranger works on several surfaces, including granite. Kids shouldn't tire of this playset as quickly because you can code Ranger to move in so many different scenarios or put him in the play mode for different options.

I will say that Ranger does not make tight turns. When he's dancing to one particular song he needs plenty of space. Also, when coding him to go to a certain location you have to take into account his turning radius to get him to that point. Our 18 month old is fascinated by Ranger and always wants the "doggy" to play with. She's obviously not coding (yet!) but likes the play mode and rolling Zip around. So this toy is appealing to multiple ages .🙂

Purchased as a gift for almost 3 year old and she loves it! So easy for her to understand how to use and with all the pieces she definitely has plenty of activities she will grow into as she learns about coding. Her favorite trick right now is to code it off the edge of the coffee table and it has held up to her wild ways🤪 I would highly recommend this toy. It is very durable, easy to use, and definitely a grow with you type of toy for higher lever play as she gets older.

Coding Critters is a new toy set from Learning Resources to promote coding for preschool and kindergarten children. There are several sets of animal friends to choose from and we chose the dogs. It retails for $39.99. The other sets have fewer pieces and cost a bit less. Packaging was easy to open and the pieces easy to assemble.
The larger and main animal takes three (3) AAA batteries, which are not included. The big dog is the coding robot. With directional arrows on its back, a child can easily press and enter the path they want the toy to take. To familiarize kids with usage, a short story with instructions using the characters is included. There are directional paw prints to help little ones visually lay out the path they want the animal to take before they enter commands. Along with the coding mode, there is also a "play" mode, allowing for more interaction.

The main animal has a smaller friend to interact with via a magnet in their noses. Our small friend is a puppy. The other plastic play pieces in our set are a dog house, a slide, a teeter totter, a ball, and a bone. The slide has a little "house" at the top that is easily lifted off the slide, which my children were frequently asking me to fix.
Besides the cardstock paw prints, there is also a cardstock tree and a fire hydrant. Both stand with the help of a plastic disc base. I found that the tree, which is large at the top, needs a larger base to be more stable. Our tree was also bent in half within a few moments of play. My kids quickly incorpirated other ibjects for the dogs to mive around and avoid. In my opinion, both tree and hydrant could easily have been left out and would not have been missed.
I tried the set with my three and four year olds. They had a lot of fun choosing directions for the dog. The three year old really enjoys the "dance" mode. My six year old wanted to try it out as well and enjoyed determining the dog's path.

As a member of Brilliant Minds, I get the opportunity to review toys for which I am reimbursed.

My kids love playing with Coding Critters by Learning Resources. Ranger is a cute interactive puppy. Together with sidekick Zip they make a great duo that introduces coding to kids. Also the playset, which includes a slide, doghouse and seesaw, promotes imaginative play and creating coding challenges. My 6-year old loves playing Code Mode where she programs the Ranger’s steps to reach Zip, walk to the tree to hide, fetch the tennis ball, and reach other goals. It is pretty intuitive and easy to figure out how to program instructions for the puppy’s movement. My 3-year old enjoys Play Mode where he takes care of Ranger by feeding and petting him and he also absolutely loves making Ranger dance and sing. Overall, this is a neat toy that is interactive and teaches coding basics in a fun way. I recommend it.

Really cute and simple to use. Got it for a 2.5 yr old who loves it. We work on directions, not so much the step counting just yet. It has “play modes” too where it sings or sleeps. The battery compartment is a little strange, where 1 battery sits below the other two, so it looks like you only need two, but it actually takes 3 batteries (AAA) to work, which is mentioned on the box

The media could not be loaded.
