Pros: lightweight, easy to install, strong and makes holes well.
Cons: none thst I can see
Would I buy again: Yes
Until we purchased this auger, I had just held our small front-tined tiller as vertically as possible and let it churn away until the hole was deep enough for the plant's root ball. This worked, but was hard work holding the tiller and the resulting hole was much wider than we really needed. We have very stony ground and needed to make 12 quart-sized holes for new plantings on a fairly steep slope. Using the tiller was out of the question, so we bought the auger and used a 1/2" drill to power it. The drill is an old school 574 rpm geared-down monster that has two handles on it and it can break your arm if it catches you right. It was the perfect tool combination. The auger went right into the rocky soil with no problems. Drilling was only blocked if a rock was bigger than the diameter of the auger, and if not exactly centered, the auger would work its way around and then push the rock out of the hole.
Because I used such a powerful drill, if the auger struck soft soil it changed from auger to screw, and would stop pushing out earth and begin burrowing into it. I found that there was a technique that worked for me: First, use short bursts of power, with the auger perpendicular to the slope and holding back on its advancing in. Second, once the auger was 3-4" in, I straightened the angle to vertical and moved the auger in a sideways circular motion without going deeper to enlarge the hole's diameter. Now I'd run the drill full speed and sort of "wave" it around as I slowly lowered the auger into the correctly sized hole. If I went down too fast, the auger would screw itself into the ground and if it bound up the drill would kick back, with painful results.
Overall, this is a well made, useful and tough tool that made a hard job much easier.
When going deep, you must pull the drill & dirt up every few inches or it gets stuck below the soil. Then you must reverse to get it out? That’s when the drill falls out.
